Amazing Wedding Reception Send Offs

May 29th, 2010

We’ve all been to the common wedding receptions where everyone welcomes and celebrates the newlywed couple. We watch them do the dance line, and cut the cake. But creative couples often enjoy coming up with a brilliant and magical fashion to create a memorable send off.

Incorporating sparklers in wedding ceremonies have taken off in popularity recently. Some reasons this has come to be are sparklers are relatively cheap, they enable dazzling photo opportunities and sparklers are very versatile regarding the different things that can be done with them. Their most popular use is of course sparkler send off, but many people have also used smaller sparklers for favors and decorations too.

Are wedding sparklers safe?

With appropriate use and discretion you should have no problems utilizing sparklers as your send off. A few things to be aware of are:
Rehearse the send off; everything about the wedding is rehearsed, the send off should be rehearsed too.
Keep a few 5 gallon buckets of water to place the sparklers in after they are used.  These things get really hot.
Make sure your photographer has some experience photoing sparklers.

What duration should i buy?
How long sparklers last is directly related to the length of the sparkler. For weddings with over 50 guests most planners recommend 36 inch sparklers. Good quality 36 inch sparklers should last just over 4 minutes, burn bright with a consistent radius of sparkles. Cheaper, generic sparklers that don’t have a brand and say “wedding sparklers” on the front generally tend to “pop” because of poor quality from air getting into the slurry of the sparkler batter when manufactured. An unfortunately timed unexpected pop can have bad consequences. Always buy sparklers from a reputable dealer that is selling name brand high quality sparklers.

What is the best way to ignite the sparklers?
For the small sparklers a regular Bic lighter will suffice but for sparklers 20 inches and over a grill type lighter should be sufficient to ignite the lighter. For immediacy it is recommend to use a butane torch as they will ignite the sparklers nearly instantaneously. It is not recommend to use matches because they don’t get hot enough to ignite large sparklers.

To conclude, the goal of a send off is to make it memorable and fun. Sparklers create that atmosphere and the pictures will be fabulous!
